A Hug It Forward Project

One of our very own Rotaractors — Michael Tirpak, 2015-2016 Rotaract President of Daytona State College, Daytona Beach Campus — is dedicated to helping underprivileged children receive an education.

We support and stand with him in his cause. Hug it Forward, a nonprofit organization is a grass-roots organization that facilitates education and awareness by empowering communities to build "bottle schools."

Bottle schools are schools built using “eco-bricks” — plastic bottles stuffed with inorganic trash. Entire communities come together to build a more sustainable educational infrastructure for their future.

Hug It Forward’s goal is to share the bottle school technology so that communities all over the world can build their own bottle school.

Tirpak's mission is to raise $13,000 to sponsor a two-classroom "bottle school" in Guatemala. Michael's vision is to inspire Rotaract and Rotary Clubs throughout District 6970 to raise money for a world-changing international project.

Since October 2009, communities under the direction of Hug It Forward, have completed 60 successful bottle school projects.

Michael: "On June 5, 2014, I made the most impactful decision of my life; I decided to go on a trip to build a "bottle school" in Guatemala. At the time, I didn't realize how big of an effect these poverty stricken communities were going to have on me. It was more than just an experience. It changed my entire life. I went to Guatemala expecting to help them, but in the end, they were the one who helped me."

The walls of these schools are insulated with plastic bottles stuffed with inorganic trash. These "eco-bricks" are stacked in between chicken wire and covered in cement. The buildings are sustainable, professionally built and have structurally sound frames.
